Back in India, when I was a child, there was a device which few rich people carried around, Mostly the architects, doctors, builders .. Yes ..the PAGER !!
On my first day @Amazon one of my team mate ordered a new pager for me. Yes there is a pager duty in Amazon and if your team is good its a great learning experience. In my team each person has a pager duty once in 4-5 weeks. Also there is a secondary person on duty and the offshore team takes over during evening time. If any code that you or your team breaks for any reason you are accountable for it and after a series of level it comes to the dev team if required to. For serious issues people are expected to resolve them on the fly right there and there are some great process to help you do that. This is like a test of whatever you know and dont know. You can be put in a spot and you ll have to perform and you is always "the team"
Alright to cut the long story short, this week I am on primary On call for the first time and so far in the week it has been not very punishing **fingers crossed**. hope I get some interesting learning experiences on the way !!
