Today was my first day at Amazon. For those who do not know I have accepted an offer from Amazon.com to work in their Seattle office as a Software Development Engineer. I would be working with the Tiered Persistence Team and am excited to take this new role.
Two things that you would notice when you go in an Amazon office is: The people there are very smart and the Amazon tries to save a lot of money by not spending on almost anything that is not required. In turn it passes all those savings to the customer and you know that when you go in the office. My team is in their one of their older buildings and though its a pretty big building, each area looks like a start up !!. No money wasted on putting carpets on the walls or expensive furniture etc. Though I should say there is everything that an employee would require: high end machines, ergo chairs , ergo mices etc.I had to choose between a mac and a ThinkPad and I took a ThinkPad :P.
I was into a team meeting within 30 mins from the time I entered my office !! [Though I had nothing to say or report] and I told the team about my self and mgr said: "Pavan welcome to the team"; that's all .. get to business :)
If I own a company sometime in the future it would be like this .. save money from fancy things and pass it to the customers :)
P.S: The bottle in the pic above is what the HR joked the team would win after we did the 30 min Amz-Trivia quiz during orientation. Later everyone got the bottles, bags , laptops etc.
"Work hard, Have Fun, Make History" is amz's tag line.
